Pictures from Week 3

On Thursday we drove about an hour south (and were still in the boundaries of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT) to visit a village called Kwali. Two primary schools in this village will receive KidSmart computers. Before we went to the schools, we stopped to see the Local Education Secretary who is also the traditional king of the village. Our client was telling us he is a very important person so the village was named after him. Mr. Kwali is standing in between me and Sumit in this photo. 

Take notice to the goat in the background. You see goats and chickens all over the place in the more rural areas. And to those wondering, they are eaten, not kept as pets.  

This was the first school where I saw solar panels being used to generate energy. Solar would be a fantastic solution to the energy supply problems Nigeria faces, if only it wasn't such a costly investment. The energy generated on top of this water tower is used to pump water to faucets throughout the school.  We spoke with one school principal about putting solar panels on the roof of classrooms, and he worried about vandalism to the equipment. Schools would need to secure barb wire on the roof to protect the investment. Security is always an issue here and unfortunately, it adds to a project's cost.   

I've talked a lot about power so here is a photo of a generator. A lot of schools have them, but they don't have the funds to use them. You have to fill it with diesel to run it. 

On Friday, Sumit and I gave a Project Management training workshop to the heads of units at UBEB. This was one of our project deliverables. Fortunately for me, Sumit is a certified project manager at IBM so although we presented together on Friday, I learned a great deal about PM from him while preparing for this workshop.  There were 15 people in attendance in total and we received great feedback from the chairman on the training.
